Curriculum
DSCF0662Okinawa International School has a transdisciplinary curriculum that is engaging, relevant, challenging and significant for learners in the 3–12 age range. In developing a curriculum of international education for primary school students, OIS adheres to the International Baccalaureate – Primary Years Program (IB-PYP) definition of curriculum that is broad and inclusive.  The school’s curriculum includes all student activities, academic and non-academic, for which the school takes responsibility, since they all have an impact on student learning. OIS makes sure that all students are supported to participate in the programme to the fullest extent possible.

Resources are carefully selected to compliment curriculum implementation and assessment. Professional development includes a variety of activities including the important component of in-service time, which provides for professional growth of the staff in collaborative planning, implementation, and evaluation and instructional improvement.

DSCF0693The Program of Inquiry (POI) centralizes on the IB- PYP (Primary Years Program) transdisciplinary themes of Inquiry: These Transdisciplinary Units of Inquiry (UOI), wherein the focus is the learner, is based on a concept driven curriculum. Students inquire into, and learn about, these globally significant issues in the context of units of inquiry, each of which addresses a central idea relevant to a particular transdisciplinary theme. Lines of inquiry are identified in order to explore the scope of the central idea for each unit (PYP Making It Happen) Coherence across the curriculum is evident in the exploration and re-exploration of concepts that transcends the boundaries of individual disciplines/subjects like Science, Social Studies, ICT,  Languages, Mathematics, Music, P.E. and Arts.

ESL Class  focuses on Language and Reading.  ESL has emphasis on the following (1.) using English Language both as an instrument for thought and social interaction and for understanding about the nature of the language itself (2.) the language of other disciplines (3) language as an art.

Music and P.E are both taught in English and Japanese.

Independent Study and Research Period (ISRP)
Students are given Independent Study and Research Period to inculcate good study habits in and after school hours.  It aims to strengthen their innate potentials to become independent life-long learners.

Collaboration with Public Schools
Our Elementary students need to closely coordinate with a public school because OIS offers English Immersion Program. All of our Elementary students are enrolled in local public school. OIS releases reports twice a year such as Attendance Sheets and Report Cards to the schools where they are enrolled.  Students also receive regular Japanese school textbooks and medical check-ups for free.

Every year, the students along with our OIS Principal visit their respective Public School Principals and Board of Education for introductions. We have been maintaining good communication with the public schools. The public schools support our program which makes transition from OIS to public school easier.  Students who will graduate from the Elementary Program can be admitted by any Junior High Schools in Japan.
