About the Curriculum
Believing in holistic education and developing a child intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically, OIS has chosen an inquiry-based and subject-based approach. In an inquiry-based approach, students are given time to ask, think, explore, experiment, research, care, take risk and reflect. It is a great opportunity for the students to learn, grow, and develop through their own pace. Subject-based approach is design to help them learn big concepts and facts that drive them to connect and inquire to develop their language skills both in Japanese and in English. A curriculum of inquiry-based and subject-based approaches prepare the students to be life long learners and a well- equipped citizen in a changing global community.
The Program of Inquiry (POI) centralizes on the IB- PYP (Primary Years Program) transdisciplinary themes of Inquiry: These Transdisciplinary Units of Inquiry (UOI), wherein the focus is the learner, is based on a concept driven curriculum. Students inquire into, and learn about, these globally significant issues in the context of units of inquiry, each of which addresses a central idea relevant to a particular transdisciplinary theme. Lines of inquiry are identified in order to explore the scope of the central idea for each unit (PYP Making It Happen) Coherence across the curriculum is evident in the exploration and re-exploration of concepts that transcends the boundaries of individual disciplines/subjects like Science, Social Studies, ICT, Languages, Mathematics, Music, P.E. and Arts.
