Education of Elementary school

PYP [ Primary Years Programme ]

A unique method of education that explores all subjects through interdisciplinary themes

Setting IB-PYP, the center of learning, we support students’ growth as they find happiness in inquiring and understanding its process and method. By teaching them to see its essence, regardless of a fixed idea, students come to think deeply about things around them and problems of entire society.
We acquire all holistic education for physical, emotional social development of learners.

Interdisciplinary curriculum spanning six units of inquiry

We cultivate skills in Math, Social Studies, English and Science through the inquiry of the six themes.
At the same time, we value leading them to recognize the connection between what they learn at school and in society.

Theme 2WHERE WE ARE IN PLACE AND TIME
Theme 3HOW WE EXPRESS OURSELVES
Theme 4HOW THE WORLD WORKS
Theme 5HOW WE ORGANIZE OURSELVES
Theme 6SHARING THE PLANET

Exhibition

They choose an inquiry theme individually or collaboratively and exhibit knowledge, skills, and attitudes toward people things, and all actions that they acquire in the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. It is an essential requirement for Middle Years Programme.

Learning environment

Team teaching supporting the multilingual environment

In elementary school, foreign teachers and Japanese teachers plan classes together and hold team-teaching to students according to their level and subject. For example, when class is held in English, a foreign teacher mainly handles the class while the Japanese teacher plays a supporting role. By doing so, even in an English environment, children do not rely too much on a Japanese teacher and acquire skills by learning independently.

English competency

At OIS, students learn not only listening and speaking, but also achieving the competence to express their opinions with a good command of English.
◆Eiken …Aim to acquire level 2 or higher by 6th grade.

Intensive Japanese instruction

Japanese language class is the foundation of learning and the International Baccalaureate inquiry class is taught in both English and Japanese. To have a good command of English, students strengthens the skills of the first language, Japanese, that leads to English skills.

Utilizing advanced ICT

For higher learning efficiency specifically, IT skills development with promptitude toward information society, all the students use a tablet (iPad) to support English, Japanese, and Math as well as the inquiry in the International Baccalaureate. With the advanced ICT environment, we challenge to provide future generation classes.
